SoFA Design Institute Celebrates Filipino Heritage Through Student Exhibit, “iPAMANA: Honoring Filipino Stories through Furniture”

PHILIPPINES— At SoFA Design Institute, the balance between tradition and innovation lies at the heart of its design education, encouraging students to create work that is not only visually compelling, but also grounded in identity, and purpose. As Filipino design continues to gain recognition on the global stage, a new generation of designers is finding meaningful ways to honor the country's rich cultural heritage while shaping its creative future.

This vision came to life through iPAMANA: Honoring Filipino Stories through Furniture, an exhibition presented by SoFA Design Institute's Interior Design students from July 13 to 16, 2026  at the SoFA Collab Cove. Serving as the culmination of months of research, ideation, and design development under the mentorship of IDr. Kaye Manansala, the exhibit invited the public  into a thoughtful exploration of Filipino culture through contemporary furniture and interior design.

The exhibit transformed the campus into an immersive gallery where every piece carried a story. Drawing inspiration from local mythology, folklore, craftsmanship, landscapes, and everyday Filipino experiences, the students reimagined familiar narratives into furniture and interior concepts that bridged heritage with modern living. Each work reflected a careful dialogue between material, form and function, demonstrating how interior designers can preserve cultural memory while responding to the evolving needs of contemporary spaces.

The exhibition also welcomed members of the Philippine Institute of Interior Designers (PIID), whose visit underscored the relevance of nurturing the next generation of Filipino interior designers. Their presence highlighted the importance of strengthening connections between design education and professional practice, while recognizing the students' thoughtful interpretations of Filipino identity through furniture and spatial design.

Beyond their aesthetic appeal, the featured pieces revealed a deep commitment to research and cultural understanding. Every furniture piece was thoughtfully crafted through a process that challenged students to engage with history, community, and identity, resulting in designs that celebrated Filipino narratives with sensitivity and intention. Together, the collection illustrated the enduring relevance of local stories and the power of design as a medium for preserving and reinterpreting cultural heritage.

The exhibition also reflected SoFA Design Institute's distinctive approach to creative education. Through mentorship from practicing professionals and the SoFA Method, a unique way of education where abstract and esoteric ideas are supported, students are encouraged to explore design as a form of storytelling, one capable of creating meaningful experiences, fostering dialogue, and inspiring new ways of seeing the world.

"What excites me most about iPAMANA is how our students utilized the full spectrum of the SoFA Method, from ideation to execution, giving families, friends, and the public a chance to experience it firsthand," shared Aaron Paglicawan, SoFA Design Institute Interior Design Chairperson.

As emerging designers continue to navigate an increasingly interconnected creative landscape, a strong sense of cultural identity remains one of their greatest strengths. For the students behind iPAMANA: Honoring Filipino Stories through Furniture, the exhibition marked more than the culmination of an academic project. It represented the beginning of their journey as interior designers who understand that every object, every space, and every detail has the potential to tell a story. By carrying Filipino narratives into contemporary design, they contribute to a growing movement that celebrates heritage not as something confined to the past, but as a living source of creativity for generations to come.
