For Nina Eiisa , fashion is more than following what is trending. It is a language of individuality, a reflection of personality, and a response to the world around us. At 25, the Manila-based photographer has already carved out her own creative space, bringing together fashion, portraiture, and entrepreneurship through a distinctly understated visual style.

A graduate of Enderun Colleges with a degree in Entrepreneurship, Villanueva pursued her passion for photography further in 2016, studying at Instituto Marangoni in Milan and Paris. Her work has since been featured in publications including Style Weekend and Elegant Magazine, while her entrepreneurial journey led her to establish her own studio in Makati.

A Different Take on High Fashion

Looking at fashion in 2017, Villanueva saw a shift away from simply chasing trends.

“I feel like high fashion in 2017 isn’t just about trends and fads but more of an expression of personal style and individuality as well as our response to our surrounding environment,” she shares.

That perspective is particularly relevant to the Filipino fashion scene, where creativity often meets practicality. With the Philippines’ tropical climate, summer staples such as flip-flops, swimsuits, and shorts naturally become part of everyday style. During the monsoon season, light layering, sweaters, and jackets offer both function and fashion.

For Villanueva, Filipino style is also deeply influenced by street and urban culture, particularly within the city. It is a scene where personal expression continues to evolve through the way people dress.

Her own fashion references come from a mix of digital and print sources, including Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, and Elle.

From Portraits to Fashion

Villanueva’s relationship with photography began during college, when she started shooting portraits before eventually moving into fashion photography.

Her approach is rooted in restraint. When photographing fashion, she gravitates toward simplicity and understated elegance. With portraits, however, her focus becomes more personal.

“I believe that each person is fearfully and wonderfully made, so I aim to bring out the best in my subjects and make them feel and look their best,” she explains.

That balance between simplicity and individuality is also visible in the way she approaches creative concepts.

The Freedom of Streetwear

For her latest shoot, Villanueva wanted to step outside the expected visual language of street fashion. Instead of relying on familiar urban and hip-hop references, she explored a more elevated interpretation of streetwear, mixing high-end pieces with a sense of freedom and movement.

“The inspiration behind this shoot is freedom in style in street wear,” she says. “I wanted to show street fashion is liberating as it can be used to freely express not only one’s style but also personality and even mood.”

The concept also gave her an opportunity to experiment. She played with unconventional angles and backgrounds, deliberately moving away from approaches she might normally use for a different kind of fashion story.

The change in perspective became part of the story itself, allowing the photographs to feel spontaneous, open, and unrestricted.

Building Something of Her Own

One of Villanueva’s proudest achievements so far is opening her own studio in Makati, combining her creative practice with her entrepreneurial background.

Still, she sees it less as a final destination and more as another chapter.

“The ‘greatest’ achievement yet still has to come,” she says.

Her plans moving forward are simple but purposeful: continue providing meaningful experiences for clients, keep shooting and learning, grow as an artist, and share what she has learned with young and aspiring creatives.

Rather than defining success through a single milestone, Villanueva measures her progress through continuous growth.

“I wouldn’t really say I have any specific goals except to keep learning and growing as an artist and photographer and succeeding as an entrepreneur.”

Keeping Faith, Staying Grounded

At the center of Villanueva’s creative and personal journey is her faith.

“Keep God first,” she says of her life motto. For her, faith provides the strength to face challenges while keeping her grounded and focused on what matters.

It is perhaps this combination of ambition and groundedness that best defines her creative path. From studying photography across Milan and Paris to building a studio in Makati, Villanueva continues to explore what fashion and photography can become when they are approached not simply as aesthetics, but as forms of expression.

For Nina Eiisa Villanueva, the future remains open. There is no single image of success, no fixed definition of fashion, and no final destination in sight. There is simply the work, the learning, and the freedom to keep creating.
